A South Roxana business man will spend 18 months in federal prison on charges charges of tax evasion and making an illegal payment to a government official. That sentence was handed down Thursday against 53-year old Stephen K. Sweet of the 6900 block of Illinois Route 111 who pleaded guilty to those charges in 2012.
Sweet reported a loss of more than $70,000 for the 2005 tax year, a move that resulted in a zero tax debt. He also admitted that he presented officials at Scott Air Force Base with items of value in 2008 and 2009, hoping that they would gain more benefits in the future.
In addition to the prison term, Sweet will serve three months of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay a fine of $52,400, a restitution amount of nearly $227-thousand to the IRS and a special assesment of $250.
