A brief scare at the Federal Building in Alton was taken care of in short order Thursday afternoon.  The facility received a letter in the mail addressed to the Alton Federal Courthouse written in pencil.  It was deemed to be suspicious, so employees called Alton Police, who in turn called the Alton Fire Department, and then a Madison County Hazmat team.

The hazmat team swabbed the letter and it turned out negative.  But Emily Hejna, Public Information Officer with the Alton Police Department, says they were able to turn a negative into a positive.
