A suspicious fire Monday morning in Alton remains under investigation by police and fire authorities. The blaze destroyed a garage and its contents at a residence at 26 East Elm Street. An Alton fire official would not say the incident was an arson, but said it was suspicious in nature.
The garage had no electric service and the owner of the home says many items were locked up the building including a car, motorcycle and personal watercraft. All were destroyed in the fire that broke out just before sunrise on Monday. Fire crews were able to bring the blaze under control and put it out in about 15 minutes, and no one was injured. The cause and origin team from the Alton Police and Fire Departments continues to investigate.
