The only known evening Memorial Day service held at a National Cemetery this year will take place today in Alton. The 9th Memorial Day Sunset Ceremony is planned for the Alton National Cemetery on Pearl Street just north of Broadway. More than 500 veterans and their family members are buried at the site. Tonight's event begins at 6:30.

Chaplin David Bowman is the featured speaker tonight, ROTC students from Alton High School will take part in the ceremony, Eric Zino of Marquette will sing the National Anthem and, Phyllis Banks will offer three musical selections, and Alton Mayor Brant Walker will offer a few words. The event should last about 45 minutes to an hour. There is limited seating, so participants are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs.
