A Peoria-area college student who hanged himself last November, three months into his freshman year, has inspired a bill to allow disclosure of mental health problems from a college to the student's parents. Chris Predmore had told a counselor at Illinois State University he'd tried to kill himself last summer. Confidentiality laws kept ISU from telling his dad, Mike Predmore of Bartonville. Now it's too late.

“This bill, should it become law, cannot guarantee that every student would sign a release for their parents to be contacted” for a possible intervention, Predmore told a Senate committee. “At the very least, this legislation would raise awareness about suicide and depression. And if it saves just one life of a college student, then we believe it is worth (becoming law).”
HB 3599 has passed the Senate Higher Education Committee.
