Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, and it fluctuates between the second and third leading cause of death among teens in Illinois. Public Health Spokeswoman Sabrina Miller says there are quite a few signs that indicate a person is suicidal.
About a thousand people in Illinois kill themselves each year. The state spends about 539-million dollars annually to pay for suicides and to treat attempts by teens. When it comes to national states, someone commits suicide about every 40 seconds. That amounts to about one million each year. Another five million people make the attempt. Experts say suicide is preventable. People can get help by calling the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK.
