A pair of students from Alton High were honored last week by the Alton/Godfrey Rotary Club. Sophia Macias and Matthew Hopkins were named the Students of the Month for September and were formally presented with awards on September 8th at the Banquet Center Alton Sports Tap.

Sophia Macias is the daughter of Barry and Maria Macias of Godfrey. Her academic consistency qualified her for a membership in the National Honors Society and a selection as Junior Marshall at last spring’s graduation ceremony. She has been a member of the volleyball, girl’s tennis and soccer teams and participates numerous clubs including Mu Alpha Theta, Student Council and the Redbird Nest. She hopes to attend the University of Illinois and purse a degree in the health or medical field.

Matthew Hopkins is the son of David and Traci Hopkins of Godfrey. He has also been a consistent academic achiever, earning him membership into the National Honor Society. He’s an active member of the Student Council and was selected to the Young Adults Committee of the Riverbend Growth Association. He has lettered in golf, swimming, baseball and participates in a number of clubs, including Mu Alpha Theta, the Physics, Biology and Spanish clubs. He hopes to earn an appointment of service to one of the service academies with his first choice being the U.S. Air Force Academy where he hopes to major in aeronautical engineering.
