Students at Roxana High School will be back in class today for the first time following a fatal traffic crash that claimed the life of a classmate last week. 16 year old Samantha "Sami" Owsley died in the crash in Bethalto Saturday night and four other young people were injured but are recovering. A candlelight vigil was held at the school last night in her honor.
Hundreds turned out for last night's service which was organized through social media. It was originally planned for outdoors, but was moved into the gym due to the weather. Yesterday afternoon, a balloon release was organized in Owsley's memory. This morning, students and staff from neighboring East Alton Wood River and Civic Memorial High Schools will join with Roxana High School students to continue their show of support. Roxana School District officials say counselors will remain available to students and staff over the coming days, and the Roxana School Foundation will continue to accept donations for the affected families and memorials on behalf of the Owsley family. Roxana High School officials have cancelled this week's alumni basketball game and this weekends play has been postponed. Sporting events for today and Wednesday will go on as planned, and a decision is expected today on events for Thursday. Funeral visitation for the teen who would have turned 17 on November 11th, will take place Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wood River with a funeral service there Thursday at 10am.
