While statistics show violence in Alton is on the decline, there is still enough of a problem that community organizers are putting together an event tomorrow to bring attention to the topic. The inaugural "Stop the Violence" rally will be held at Hellrung Park from 1-3pm.
Alton Police Chief David Hayes says the African-American community is especially affected by violence, as 85% of all murders and gun violence in the last 30 years has been black-on-black crime.
The day will start with a short promotional video produced by event organizer Travis Evans. Hayes says the police department has chipped in to buy the hot dogs, chips and juice for the snacks. Hellrung Park is located at 702 Central Avenue.
