If you plan to spend any time on the water this summer, the Illinois Conservation Police want you to be safe.  State law requires kids under 13 to wear a life jacket while boating.  Conservation Police Director Raphael Gutierrez says it's a good idea for adults as well.

Anyone riding a jet ski must wear a life vest regardless of age.  Last year there were 20 boating deaths in Illinois.  Fourteen of those could have been prevented if the victim was wearing a lifejacket.  The other six involved alcohol.
