The Illinois Emergency Management Agency is offering free potassium iodide pills to people who live near a nuclear plant. Spokesperson Patti Thompson says the pill helps protect the thyroid from radioactive iodine, which could be released during a nuclear power plant incident.
It's been a decade since they offered the pills. Residents within ten miles of the plants in Byron, Braidwood, Clinton, Dresden, LaSalle, and the Quad-Cities should receive vouchers in the next few weeks. More information is available at Ready.Illinois.gov.
