Do you own a business near an interstate or state highway?  If so, you may be getting a notice from the state to pay up.  The Illinois Department of Transportation is required by the Federal Highway Administration and state law to regulate outdoor advertising along state highways for safety and compliance reasons.

The Highway Advertising Control Act of 1971 is a law many business owners may have never hear of, but are learning about due to this new push to register the signs with the state.  IDOT spokesman Paris Ervin:

She says IDOT began updating its records about two years ago.  They have completed the inventory, and are now at the next stage of informing those without the permit, or getting the appropriate documentation for those who have unregistered signs.
