Illinois State Police now have the OK from the Federal Aviation Administration to use drones to take pictures of crime and crash scenes. But the law enforcement agency is avoiding the use of the term "drones." The ISP announced Friday that the FAA authorized what it calls its Unmanned Aircraft System program.
The department says the program will not be used for surveillance purposes. ISP says it has spent the last two years working on a program to ensure safety and compliance with all FAA and statutory requirements. While ISP says it will use the systems for crime and crash scenes, it also said it could be used in conjunction with Homeland Security to combat terrorism.
