As an effort ramps up to restore the main entrance to Springfield’s Oakridge Cemetery, there’s another effort to see a portion of the cemetery restored before an important date as it relates to Abraham Lincoln. The Third Street gate at the cemetery has significant meaning, says cemetery director Michael Lelys.  “The actual original entrance to the cemetery was off the east side of our cemetery coming off of Third Street, and that’s the actual entrance that Abraham Lincoln’s body was brought through to the receiving vault that’s down there now,” Lelys said. There is work under way to establish a foundation and raise funds to renovate the area. The hope is to make the entrance accessible for the Lincoln Funeral Recreation in 2015.
