More than 25 parishoners joined Bishop Thomas Paprocki of the Springfield Catholic Diocese Thursday when he took a tour of St. Mary's Church in Brussels. The Calhoun County landmark was the site of a massive fire on Christmas Eve that completely destroyed the interior of the church but left the outer walls mostly intact. In the fire there were no injuries and many items inside the church were saved, including many of the statues and priests vestments.

To help members cope with the loss, the church is planning to hold a memorial service at 2 pm on Sunday, January 1st. The parish is also encouraging people to donate to a fund they created to help with the rebuildng process. You can mail a donation to St. Mary's Rebuilding Fund at St. Mary's Church, P.O. Box 38, Brussels, IL 62013.
