Sports marketing is a niche that brings thousands of people to the Riverbend each year, and local tourism officials are looking at more ways to attract sports fans to the region. More than 3,000 people are expected for the second annual Kick It 3v3 Midwest Regional Championships Soccer Tournament in July at Gordon Moore Park in Alton. That is one of the biggest events the Alton Regional Convention and Visitor's Bureau has landed so far.
CVB President Brett Stawar says the sports marketing committee met last week to discuss other possibilities.
Pickleball is a racquet sport which combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. In December 2010, the CVB assembled a Sports Committee comprised of representatives from park and recreation departments, athletic venues and hotels throughout northern Madison, Jersey and Calhoun Counties. By soliciting other sporting events, the CVB Sports Committee is hoping to grow the impact sports can have on the tourism partners throughout the region.
