The second phase of the Bethalto Sports Complex is one step closer to becoming a reality following the Village Board's approval of a contract for professional services with Hoelscher Engineering. The board voted unanimously to allow Mayor Steve Bryant to sign off on the agreement, allowing the firm to create the final design and outline any cut and fill, dirt moving and wetland clearing that needs to be done before the fields are constructed later this year.
The clearing of trees and wetlands needs to be done by mid-April to avoid any delays caused by the Indiana bat, which uses the trees as nesting space. If all goes according to plan, Bryant says the fields could begin taking shape by the end of the summer.
The planned expansion includes the addition of four multi-use baseball diamonds, two little league diamonds, a football field, a soccer field, parking lots, the creation of a road connecting to Stadium Drive and a bridge that would connect the new portion to the existing sports complex. Bryant says he expects the fields to be ready for use by the start of the 2014 sports season.
