A special prosecutor has been called in to investigate the theft of an unmarked Granite City Police car. An assistant prosecutor from St. Clair County will look into the incident where a now former officer claims the car was stolen while he was checking on a motorist just off Route 3 on December 28.
The St. Louis Post Dispatch reports Lt. Thomas Paul said he pulled up behind a minivan where the driver appeared to be slumped over at the wheel. When he got out to check on the driver, Paul says someone jumped into his unmarked police car, and struck him as it sped away. Then the van also sped away. The unmarked car was found the next day in St. Louis County but police weapons and equipment were missing. Paul retired shortly after the incident; he had been with the Granite City Police Department since 1988. The Madison County Sheriff’s Department conducted the investigation.
