The Illinois State Police has released information on where state residents are applying for conceal-carry permits. The most applications, based on percentage of a county's population, have been received in far southern Illinois in Hardin and White Counties, where more than 12% of the population has applied for a permit.
According to a report in the Peoria Journal Star, southwestern Illinois counties fell in the middle of the pack with Madison, Jersey, Macoupin and St. Clair all in the 5% to 6% range. Calhoun is at 7 to 8 percent of its population having applied for a conceal carry permit. ISP numbers show the lowest percentage is in Cook County at 2.3-percent. The state began accepting applications just after the first of the year with the first permits issued earlier this month.
