Gays and lesbian Illinoisans who are seriously ill may qualify for an expedited marriage license. That's so they won't have to wait until the same-sex marriage law takes effect June 1, 2014. Lambda Legal and the ACLU of Illinois secured this so the couples involved won’t have to file their own lawsuits. Is this about gaining legal benefits, or is it about compassion?
“I think it’s both,” says John Knight, LGBT project director for the ACLU of Illinois. “What we’re hearing is the desire to be able to celebrate their love and marriage before they die.” The expedited license requires a doctor-signed form and can be obtained only in Cook County.
