Sports marketing is a niche that brings thousands of people to the Riverbend each year, and a major soccer tournament completed its second year in town this past weekend. More than 3,000 people were expected for the second annual Kick It 3v3 Midwest Regional Championships Soccer Tournament at Gordon Moore Park in Alton, and it appears estimates were on the mark. There was, however, some limited grumbling about the parking fee.
It cost $5 per day to park at Gordon Moore, which Alton Regional Convention and Visitor's Bureau President Brett Stawar says was split between the CVB and the Alton United Metro Soccer Club.
Stawar says although the numbers are still being calculated, it looks as though this year's tournament generated somewhere in the neighborhood of $400,000 for the local economy.
