The Alton Fire Department has received a grant that could help reduce slip and fall accidents among the elderly.  The department has 100 smoke alarms to give away to residents 65 years of age or older that live in their own homes.  These alarms are sealed units with 10-year lithium batteries.

So how would this reduce slip and fall accidents?  Fire Chief Bernie Sebold tells The Big Z fire department personnel would be installing the units.

He says the department paid for half of the alarms, and the other half was paid through a grant from Kidde Safety Products.  To request a free alarm, call 463-3565.
