East Alton has a new mayor. Fred Bright retired at the end of April, and Joe Silkwood was selected by the village board to fill Bright’s unexpired term. Silkwood was sworn in at this week’s meeting, after just being elected to the village board last month to fill a 2-year unexpired term.
Silkwood served as the East Alton Treasurer from 1999 until last month when he retired. Prior to that served as the East Alton Park and Recreation assistant director and then director. Former Mayor Bright is dealing with health issues and a pending back surgery, so he announced his retirement about a month ago. Bright was mayor for 18 years, moving into the office in 1997 after spending a decade as a Village Trustee. Bright was the village’s Police Chief from 1972 to 1978.
