Girls in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades from schools and districts around the area are encouraged to attend the 18th annual GEMS Conference at Lewis & Clark Community College next Saturday, April 6. GEMS is short for Girls Empowered by Math and Science, and was launched nearly two decades ago as a response to a report that showed girls in elementary school show aptitude and interest in math and science, but tend to fall behind in these areas in middle school.
Event organizer Theo Tonkinson says there will also be special programs for adults as part of the event.
The conference is open to girls in Calhoun, Greene, Jersey, Macoupin and Madison Counties and East St. Louis. For registration information, call 618-550-1654, log on to this story at AltonDailyNews.com and follow the link. Today is the last day to register
