It’s just a game, when kids are playing sports. Now the parents are being reminded. The park district in Buffalo Grove, in Lake County, has installed signs at its baseball and soccer fields directed at parents, urging them not to take their children’s game too seriously.
“This is a game being played by children. If they win or lose every game of the season, it will not impact what college they attend, or their future income potential,” is part of the narrative on the sign.

Mike Terson, a Buffalo Grove council member, called for the signs after seeing something similar in Hoffman Estates. He wants parents who yell at the kids, or at the coaches, referees and umpires, to calm down. “It’s just as inappropriate at a professional sporting event, but when you take it into your community and you behave that way at a youth sporting event, it’s so much more inappropriate,” he said.
Allie Kirby, age 11, is against this kind of parental misbehavior. “It’s kind of stupid to fight about it because it’s just a game,” she said.
One parent said the people who misbehave won’t realize the signs are directed at them.
