A recent water line break in the 700 block of State Street in Alton revealed what may be an indicator of things to come. After looking more closely at the damage, the Public Works Department discovered voids under the pavement. The infrastructure is aging, but poinpointing if and when a line will fail is tricky business, according to the city's new Public Works Director.
Prior to filling the voids, workers had to be sure the integrity of the city-maintained sewer line would not be breached, causing further damage. Bob Barnhart says the department is keeping a close eye on all of the lines around town.
Barnhart says those symptoms occur through everyday wear. For example, if a water line breaks, or a truck finds a soft spot in the road. Barnhart says priority is given to the most dangerous problems and the ones that have the greatest impact on transportation.
