Teenagers excited about politics can look forward to voting in the primary next March – if they will turn 18 by the general election date in November. Gov. Pat Quinn chose the day before Independence Day and Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire as the time and place to sign the bill into law. “We're ringing a bell for democracy and expanding democracy and encouraging people to participate,” said the governor, “because we don't believe in monarchy. We don't believe in just the big shots calling all the shots.”

“I was disappointed that even though I'll be 18 and able to vote, and pick the winners in 2014,” said Nelly Farahmandpour, a Stevenson senior who appeared with the governor, “I wasn't going to be able to vote for that election’s nominees that March.” The primary election date is March 18, 2014. The general election date is Nov. 4, 2014.
