Rachel Bear and Michael Sievers, both senior at Alton High School, have been honored by the Alton/Godfrey Rotary Club as its first Students of the Month for the new school year.  Both will be eligible to win a $5000 scholarship applicable to tuition and fees at a college of their choice.  Rotary Club member Tom Juravich says this is the 16th year for the program.

Rachel Bear is the daughter of Phillip and Marietta Bear of Godfrey.  She is a regular on the high honor roll and serves as Secretary of the National Honor Society.  She has received a Congressional Letter of Academic Recognition for the past three years.  She is an accomplished musician, having been a harpist with the Alton Symphony Orchestra.  She plans to study medicine when she goes to college either through Biomedical Engineering or Pharmacy.  Michael Sievers is the son of John and Carol Sievers of Godfrey.  He has been an officer in many of the clubs in which he is a member, including Computer, Botany, German, Chess and Robotics.  He has served as an umpire in the Godfrey Park & Recreation summer baseball program.  He plans to attend the University of Oklahoma and major in Petroleum Engineering and Geology.
