A 42-year-old Granite City will spend the rest of his life behind bars following a murder conviction last month. John Holmon III has been sentenced to 70-years in prison, and will have to serve 100% of his sentence. He was babysitting his girlfriend's son at a Granite City home in September of 2012 when 20-month-old Jaesean Rusher died as the result of a closed head injury.
The normal sentence for a murder conviction is 20 - 60 years in prison, but Holmon was eligible for extended time due to the victim's age at the time of the murder. A Madison County jury delivered the verdict after a week of testimony and about three hours of deliberation on February 12. Holmon was dating the child's mother at the time of the murder.
