U.S. Senators Dick Durbin and Mark Kirk are going to bat for Illinois cities that were denied federal aid after being hit by tornadoes. They’re asking FEMA to change the funding formulas that it uses to determine eligibility for disaster aid. Durbin and Kirk say they’d like FEMA to consider local economic factors when making the determination, including median income of the residents in the area. The lawmakers say the current formula puts downstate Illinois communities at a disadvantage.
