It’s not often you hear the state overpaid its bills but one lawmaker questions if it was really an accident. Illinois Department of Revenue Spokesman Terry Horstman says former Gov. Pat Quinn’s administration overpaid 6,500 taxing bodies $168 million in 2014. Republican state Sen. Sue Rezin is skeptical the overpayments were a mistake.

Rezin says whether it was deliberate or incompetence, it follows the same pattern of overspent or misspent money from Gov. Quinn’s anti-violence programs just before an election. The highest overpaid taxing body was the Chicago Public Schools, which received $23.5 million more than it was supposed to receive.
