U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) says he was shocked and stunned to learn that an incendiary remark that a congressman supposedly made about the president didn’t happen. Durbin says he and three other senators were told by a White House staffer that a member of Congress said to the president, “I cannot even stand to look at you.” That staffer was supposedly in the room when this took place.

Durbin went with it on Facebook and in a fundraising appeal to demonstrate what the president is up against, only to have the White House say it didn’t happen. “I’ve tried not to dig this hole any deeper to say what happened. I didn’t name names on the congressman because I just thought that was going too far. But I did trust my source in terms of it happening,” Durbin said Monday in his first effort to personally explain the situation.
Durbin is neither apologizing nor expressing regret.
It’s not clear whether the whole thing was made up, or whether it was an exaggeration or misunderstanding of something someone did say.
