The U.S. Senate is getting ready to start hearings this week on stronger gun laws.  Illinois Democrat Dick Durbin says stricter laws mean safer societies.  The hearings are scheduled to begin on Wednesday.

Durbin also announced Friday he'd be holding a hearing on the constitutional aspects of the 2nd Amendment.

Durbin comments

In the aftermath of the school shooting massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, President Obama is urging Congress to pass sweeping new laws on gun safety.  Obama's proposals include universal background checks, a ban on military-style assault weapons and limits on ammunition clips.
