A big win for gay couples today. The Illinois Senate has voted to legalize gay marriage, after nearly three hours of debate. Many Republicans and even some Democrats stood against the bill, claiming it is a slap in the face to traditional marriage between a man and a woman. They were also concerned that the bill didn't provide enough protections for religious institutions.
But GOP Senator Jason Barrickman voted in favor of the proposal. He says it's just the right thing to do. Senator William Delgado presented an emotional call for support because his son was gay and struggled with the challenges that many gay people have to endure. The bill now heads to the House.
