Illinois motorists will get a chance to vote in November to ensure their gas taxes are spent on roads and bridges. The so-called lockbox amendment is aimed at protecting tax dollars intended for road and bridge repairs. State Senator Bill Haine (D-Alton) sponsored the amendment.

A 2013 audit found that lawmakers diverted almost $6 billion over a decade to state employee health insurance costs, pensions and worker’s compensation claims. One construction company says the state could have paved 7,500 miles of roads with that money.
