The man accused of killing the pastor at a Maryville church in 2009 has been found not guilty by reason of insanity. The ruling was made today in the case of 33-year-old Terry J. Sedlacek, who was accused of walking into the First Baptist Church in Maryville on March 8, 2009, and shooting Pastor Fred Winters to death.
He also stabbed other parishioners and himself during the attack before being taken into custody. The order was entered this afternoon after six years of attempting to determine his mental state at the time of the killing. This verdict supports Sedlacek’s status as unfit and unlikely to ever obtain fitness where he would ever be allowed to leave a secure facility, according to information provided by the Madison County State’s Attorney’s office. He will remain at the Alton Mental Health Center for up to 85 years - 60 for the murder and 25 additional years due to the use of a firearm.
