The Madison County State's Attorney is putting out the word that if you deal in stolen scrap metal in Madison County, there is a good chance you will get caught. Alton has recently passed tougher rules to regulate the industry, and there is an effort at the state level to do the same.
A Madison County Grand Jury indicted two Granite City men this week for allegedly stealing air conditioner units from four churches, a funeral home, and a school. It is believed they were cut up and sold to support a heroin habit. Alton Police Chief of Detectives, Lieutenant Scott Golike, says uniform laws across the state would be a great tool.
Three people were arrested and charged last week in Alton for allegedly having Missouri and St. Louis County Highway Department signs in their possession. Golike says the patrolmen develop probable cause for a traffic stop, and then check the vehicles for stolen goods.
