The U.S. Department of Education told school districts nationwide that federal law requires them to allow students to use restrooms and locker rooms "consistent with their gender identity" in May.  That continued a contentious public debate over transgender rights.  A discussion of the legal requirements is being planned for next month in Edwardsville.

On September 14, school administrators and school board members from around Madison County will gather for an informational session "Transgender in the Classroom."  Madison County Regional Superintendent of Schools Robert Daiber tells The Big Z the intent of the meeting is to learn how to follow the law.
