Illinois schools – elementary and secondary through college – wanting to improve their security facilities and procedures can apply for their share of state construction grants. $25 million is available.
“We believe this program is just an opportunity for schools to better prepare themselves,” says Don Kauerauf, chairman of the Illinois Terrorism Task Force. He says doors, walls, and glass alone cannot stop school violence; it takes partnerships and planning.

“We need to look at the entire spectrum, and have multiple areas that have to go into the emergency plan,” he adds. Already, Kauerauf says, about 100 schools have applied.
