Nearly a dozen students are recovering today after their school bus struck a tractor trailer on I-55 near Litchfield as they were returning from a field trip. Illinois State Police report 10 students and a bus driver from Highland were injured, but none of the injuries were considered life threatening. Those injured were transported to three different hospitals late Monday afternoon.

The crash happened yesterday around 4:30pm. The southbound school bus apparently struck a semi as it was either slowing or stopped in construction traffic. The students were 6th graders who attended Grantfork Upper Elementary School, and were in Springfield visiting the Lincoln sites. Eight different ambulance companies from surrounding communities responded to the accident along with three fire departments. The injured were taken to hospitals in Litchfield and Hillsboro, and one child was airlifted to Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital in St. Louis for treatment of a broken leg. The driver of the bus, 67 year old Henry Jaeger of Highland was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.  He suffered serious injuries in the crash, but with the others, is expected to recover. Southbound I-55 was shut down for several hours following the accident.
