Some people across the state have been receiving bogus phone calls, emails, and text messages claiming their utility services will be disconnected unless they make a payment. Illinois Commerce Commission Spokeswoman Beth Bosch says some of the scammers are even showing up at customers' doors.
But she urges customers not to fall for the scam.
In some cases, the con artists also try to get customers to buy a prepaid card. Bosch says customers should notify the ICC or the Attorney General's office if they suspect they've been a target of the scam.
