Former Alton Mayor Don Sandidge is being laid to rest today. His death at the age of 75 has saddened his peers, and many are reflecting on the time they spent with the man. Sandidge took office in 1997, after serving as the Chief of Police for the city until 1989. The city's treasurer at the time was current State Representative Dan Beiser, who says they were not only peers, they were also neighbors.
Upon his retirement, he was succeeded by current mayor Tom Hoechst, who also shares fond memories.
Sandidge graduated from Alton High School in 1956, served in the Marine Corp, then joined the Alton Police Department in 1962.
