While it’s not on the front burner, legalizing same sex marriage in Illinois is still on the radar of one state representative. State Rep. Greg Harris (D-Chicago) says he’s getting close to rounding up the necessary votes to pass the bill out of both the Illinois House and Illinois Senate.

“Time is certainly on our side, and on something this important I believe it’s very important to do it right,” said Harris. When pressed further on whether he’ll call the bill for a vote this week, in January or late in 2013, Harris wouldn’t offer any predictions. While Harris points to election results in four states last month where voters either approved same sex marriage or struck down gay marriage bans as a reason Illinois may be ready, opponents say they are still 32 other states that have a ban on the books.
