Last year’s harsh winter is still causing headaches for local road departments. Salt prices have risen substantially since last year, with prices approximately twice that of this time last year, according to local officials. Most local municipalities in Madison County get their salt through the county bid process.
In Wood River, Mayor Fred Ufert says they ordered 800 tons, and their price more than doubled to $73,000.

In Bethalto, Public Works Director Jay Kilmer tells a similar tale of prices doubling, although he did not have the exact cost of their 400-ton order. He says the village went through about 425 tons of salt last year.
