It was a memorable night in the Illinois State Fair's Livestock Center for the Governor's Sale of Champions. Ted, the Grand Champion steer, brought a record $100,000 for Shaelye (cq) Varner, 12, of Morris. “I usually work on it six hours a day,” she says. “Washing him, brushing him, blow-drying him, then working his hair up and getting his hair trained, and then also getting him to know me and getting him to know how to show.”
Varner says the money is going into the bank for college.

AT&T Illinois, Monsanto, and DeKalb/Asgrow shared the winning bid.
It was another animal, the Land of Lincoln Grand Champion steer, whose bid may have raised as many eyebrows. He went for $56,300 – to Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Rauner, who were not in attendance.
Rauner, of course, hopes he is the governor for next year's Governor's Sale of Champions.
