The Alton Deputy Fire Chief wants you to stay safe if you plan to enjoy boating on the Mississippi river this year. One man was lucky to escape with his life, according to Mark Harris, after crashing a jet ski and being sucked under the Mel Price Locks & Dam Sunday afternoon.
Harris tells The Big Z if you are going to be on the river in a boat or on a jet ski, you should be aware of the power of the river's current.

Anyone on a jet ski, regardless of age, is required to wear a life jacket. Fourteen people died in boating accidents last year in Illinois, and almost half of those deaths involved alcohol. Nearly all may have been prevented if the boater had been wearing a life jacket, according to information shared by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
