State Treasurer Dan Rutherford says the GOP needs to more tolerant of gay and lesbian couples. For starters, he says the Republicans can put their support behind civil unions.
Rutherford makes it clear though, that he does not support gay marriage. He says there’s a line that you just don’t cross when it comes to religious issues, and in his view gay marriage has a religious component that can’t be ignored. Rutherford also adds that the GOP needs to reach out to minority groups noting that he's an all-around better person because of his dealings with people from a wide array of ethnic and religious groups.
