Can someone who’s not a social conservative win a Republican primary for governor? State Treasurer Dan Rutherford, a social moderate, will have to hope so, along with Bruce Rauner, who’s new to politics and has not staked out conservative social positions.
Rutherford says the Republican Party mustn’t be seen as the party of white Christians only. “I’ve also said clearly that I don’t think that the Republican Party should be to the point of defining a good Republican, a bad Republican because of abortion, gay rights or guns. I know a lot of good, good, good Republicans who maybe don’t agree on those issues, and that’s OK,” he said.
