The Roxana School District is moving forward with plans to construct a new gymnasium for Roxana Junior High. The $4-million project was approved at the Roxana School Board meeting late last week and means students in grades 6, 7 and 8 will have their own gym once the project is complete.
The new gym will be located on the north side of the school, and should be completed in the 2017-18 school year. The gym will be used for junior high sporting events and for PE classes, avoiding having to use the high school gym for activities. Also at the meeting, the board approved repairs for the district tennis courts as well as repairs and upgrades to classrooms at Central School. There was also discussion about the need for a police officer on the high school campus on a regular basis, or possibly setting up a police substation at the school. No action was taken on the matter with additional discussion about levels of security and prevention programs that could be adopted at the school.
