The Village of Roxana has filed suit against several local companies over alleged contamination from cancer causing materials. The suit was filed this week in Madison County Court against ConocoPhillps, Shell Oil Company, and WRB Refining claiming the companies are responsible for spilling millions of pounds of pollution over the village since 1988.
The village is seeking a clean up of the material, mainly benzene, and the costs of litigation. There are estimates that more than 526-thousand gallons of the known carxinogen have been spilled, or leaked, into groundwater in Roxana over the past 25 years, along with other chemicals. The village claims due to the problem, village property values have declined during that time, impacting the tax base. There are also health concerns with the contamination, and Shell and other companies are facing seperate class action lawsuits over the chemicals leading to certain blood cancers of area residents.
